Writing original music is extremely fun and rewarding but is not always an easy task. Sometimes the best tunes come from emotion. That is when writers tend to be the most creative and let their true feelings come out. For me personally, my music tends to revolve around mood. For example, I wrote the song Friday about going out after a very tough week and being happy about enjoying the weekend. While Walk Around Here was written after a tough breakup with a girlfriend. You can tell by the melodies. One is very upbeat and bouncy while the other is more somber and mellow. I believe a song tells a lot about the musician and shares that life experience with the listener. As a result, listeners realate with the song and musician… in turn becoming a fan.

One of my favorite musicians Billy Joel said you know that you have a good song when you cannot imagine any other lyrics with the melody. He used the example of Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones. He is exactly right! Could you image any other words to the melody in that song. Or how about Piano Man by Billy Joel himself? That is why these musicians are so good. Not only do they write good music, but they do it consistently with each song sounding different than the other. When I write music, my goal is have each song sound different with a new feeling melody and lyric wise. Giving the listeners something new to look forward to and relate to.
